General information
Safe and reliable use of industrial objects often depend on the technical condition of wire cables, referred to commonly as wire ropes . Such ropes typically deteriorate during their lifetime for various reasons, such as external and internal corrosion and abrasion, static and dynamic mechanical stresses, etc. Deterioration results in the loss of metallic cross-sectional area (LMA) and local faults (LF), such as broken individual wires and strands. Information concerning the technical condition of rope allows timely remedial actions that increase rope lifetime and ensure their continued safe use. This information can only be obtained with special instruments.
Wire rope tester INTROS is a specially designed instrument developed for non-destructive inspection of wire ropes in the most reliable way. The design of the instrument allows the customer to use INTROS in difficult operating conditions, wherever the rope is installed. The INTROS system includes a portable basic unit (data logger) and magnetic head. The data logger, connected to magnetic head, is battery powered with internal memory storage for later downloading, and has illuminated displays to indicate current measuring information.
There are 11 sizes of magnetic heads available for inspection of ropes with round and rectangular cross-section. All of these heads are compatible with basic unit. Basic unit is available with 4, 8 and 16 M internal memory capacity and also in explosive-proof design.
Wire rope tester INTROS utilizes the magnetic flux leakage (MFL) principle of operation. The magnetic head is installed on a rope and travels along the rope during the test.
The permanent magnet"s field saturates rope section in longitudinal direction. Irregularities in the rope such as LMA and LF cause redistribution of the magnetic flux surrounding the rope, which is detected by sensors (US Pat. 6,492,808). Signals from the sensors contain critical information concerning LMA and LF, and other important conditions.
The wire rope may be examined by moving the head along the rope or by moving the rope through the head in longitudinal direction at relatively high speed. INTROS is dual-function instrument, i.e. simultaneously measures LMA and detects LF. Unlike most of competing instruments measuring information is indicated on basic unit display and simultaneously is stored in internal memory storage. LMA, LF, rope speed charts are also on-line available on a PC screen. Software WINTROS and WINTROS-RTV are powerful instruments for visualization and procession of test results.
Rugged design of INTROS meets explosion-proof and IP65 requirements. It applications cover a wide range of different sized ferrous metallic ropes used in mining industry, for aerial ropeways, cranes, elevators, shipyards, offshore platforms, etc.
Careful computer-added design and use of ultra-powerful permanent magnets make our rope testers INTROS lighter and smaller than competing instruments. INTROS meets the requirements of ASTM standard E1571-01 and European Norms, is CE marked.
